Dairy Free Chocolate Mousse - Paleo Friendly
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup raw cashews soaked for a couple of hours minimum, strained
- 3/4 cup canned coconut milk I link to my favorite brand for flavor and the fact is has no fillers or thickeners! Cream also works if dairy is tolerated.
- 1/2 cup berries of choice, I used a frozen cherry/raspberry/blueberry combo
- 1/2 cup coconut oil softened
- 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao
- 1/4 cup honey or favorite low carb sweetener, doesn't have to be a liquid sweetener. This is to taste, add more if you like.
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 pinch sea salt 1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon to taste, optional
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into a high powered blender or food processor.
- Puree until super smooth and no fruit pieces are detectable. Let your taste-buds tell you...think silky! Can take multiple minutes in a food processor.
- Be sure to taste for sweetness. Since cutting out cane sugar, I use much less sweetener than I used to, so again, taste to make sure it is what YOU are looking for!
- Divide into 4 ramekins or other small dishes and place in fridge to chill and set.

I am thrilled to see that this recipe is still up! I used to make this all the time after college for girls nights and other special events. I would chill it in those little glass stemmed Irish coffee cups (or small lidded glass bowls if I was traveling and wanted it to fit in a cooler more easily) and serve with raspberries (usually thawed from frozen). It was always such a hit but I never actually wrote down the recipe until today. Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks Holly! I just made a batch myself…it is so sinfully rich and creamy, we love it! And fresh berries take it over the top!
Hi!
Can’t wait to make this! ,I have a question though. I have powdered stevia (yuk) I hate it, lol. Is stevia drops better?
Thank you!
Hi Jackie!! You use additional sweetener of your choice. If you do not like stevia, you could try Lakanto Monkfruit, erythritol, or really anything!
This is my go-to dish-to-pass! Thanks so much!!!
Glad you like it so much Holly…a quick and easy yet totally decadent dessert!
Hey, not sure whether you will be able to answer this for me… but I was wondering if regular heavy cream would work instead of coconut milk? I never use coconut milk because I have a family member that is allergic to coconut. Thanks!
Definitely Lavendercat!
Awesome, thank you! 🙂
We live in the tropics; will be trying either the pineapple or the apple bananas (yes, they do in fact taste like apples), or to heck with it — both!!
Will also be cutting down on the honey, and adding more stevia instead.
I would never have thought of apples and chocolate…but bananas and chocolate I love! How creative Tracy!
Yes, it in fact was nummy. I agree; bananas were made to be paired with chocolate, as far as I’m concerned!! I used burro bananas, which aren’t overly sweet, instead of the apple bananas. It made for a dessert that wasn’t overpowered by the sweetness of the pineapple. I will be passing on this recipe to our friends to try for themselves. Perhaps next time I will use mangoes.
Any recommendations for a Stevia substitute?
more honey crystal, to taste!
This is my favorite new dessert. I use frozen dark cherries and it tastes great!!
Thanks Misty! I love the idea of cherries!!
I read “think silly” instead of “silky” LOL! Sounds yummy but I’m sure I could do something silly. 🙂
I suspected this would be another avocado based mousse – but no – so I’ll have to give it a whirl, won’t it be lovely on a hot day to take out of the fridge? Mmmmmm:)
This looks great! NuNaturals is my favorite too. 🙂
Made this last night..SO GOOD thank you!! Made mine with raspberries.
Yay Yuna! Love to hear it, thanks for letting me know!m. Raspberry is my favorite too…..
This looks amazing!! Our family just went gluten, soy, and dairy free due to my daughter’s and my food sensitivities. Unfortunately we can not use Stevia because of the reaction my daughter gets. Is there any other sweetener I could use so she can eat it? She can’t tolerate any of the artificial sweeteners, no matter what the base is. She gets terrible headaches. Thank you!
Oh sure Maryjo….honey, maple syrup, coconut nectar would all work for you! Start 1 additonal tablespoon and add more to taste!
Every time I visit your blog I run across another great recipe I just have to try! Looks great!!!
A great compliment Cassidy, this is one addicting goodie, be warned!
Oh, Tessa,
I am new here, but blown away with all the great things you make with totally healthy ingredients!! It makes me so happy to find a healthy cooking blog like yours. I feature 4-5 each week and share on FB. I’d love to see you there!
Thank you Jacqueline, I’d be happy to participate….thanks for you kind and generous words!
Mmm! I like the idea of using cashews. I tried avocado and wasn’t a huge fan, but cashews I’ll have to try. 😀
Oh my goodness! Now this looks AMAZING!! I will be making this recipe over the weekend! Thank you for posting 🙂

This sounds amazing! I have the NuNaturals liquid stevia and haven’t found a recipe I wanted to try it in- this is it!!
I think you will love it Heather….both the stevia AND the mousse! As a general rule, I usually replace about half the sweetener with liquid stevia! Hope you enjoy it!
